The only thing that's standing in your way between the life you have and the life you're called to have is the stories that are in your head.
Speaker A:So this begs the question, what stories do you keep telling yourself?
Speaker B:Welcome to Online Business for Christian Creatives, the show that helps you build a business that honors God, fuels your creativity, and actually pays the bills.
Speaker B:I'm your host, Jim Burgoon, leadership coach, Faith first, entrepreneur, and a guy who's made just about every mistake so you don't have to.
Speaker B:Let's get into it.
Speaker A:Hey, guys.
Speaker A:Welcome back to the show.
Speaker A:This is your host, Jim Boon, and I'm so grateful for you here today.
Speaker A:We're celebrating a milestone and before we go into the episode on Anchor Point and Mindsets, I want to take this moment to celebrate.
Speaker A:Thank you so much for being a listener.
Speaker A:Thank you so much for the comments, for the reviews, for checking out the website, jumping on the newsletters, and just being part of the community we're starting to build because of you, the guests that have been on here.
Speaker A:We have made it to episode 50.
Speaker A:I. I want to take this moment because we want to celebrate you, the listener, and we want to.
Speaker A:We want to thank God for the journey we're on together.
Speaker A:So this is episode 50 and we're on our track now to episode 100.
Speaker A:With that being said, let's jump into the episode now.
Speaker A:You hear a lot of talk about mindset.
Speaker A:Like, if you go online at any point in the thing, you're like, everything you need to do is wrapped around your mindset or everything.
Speaker A:You just change your mind and you change your life and.
Speaker A:And all these things.
Speaker A:Now, I will say there is some truth in that, but it's not as easy as it sounds.
Speaker A:It's really difficult to change your mindset.
Speaker A:As somebody who is continually working with people on their mindset, it is hard to change a mindset.
Speaker A:Why?
Speaker A:Because you have anchor points.
Speaker A:And what are anchor points?
Speaker A:I'm so glad you asked.
Speaker A:Anchor points are these places in your life where something happened.
Speaker A:It doesn't matter if it was good or bad.
Speaker A:It was something that happened.
Speaker A:And you have told this story over and over to where you and our anchor anchored into that place.
Speaker A:For whatever consequence comes from that story, you're now stuck in that place.
Speaker A:Think of it like a boat or a ship.
Speaker A:A ship at sea, when it wants to stop, it doesn't just float willy nilly.
Speaker A:It drops its anchor and it stays in a single location.
Speaker A:These are what anchor points are.
Speaker A:And they have to be.
Speaker A:They're a big deal for us because the stories we tell are oftentimes the stories we frame our life with.
Speaker A:And what we frame our life with is the mindset we carry.
Speaker A:It's not just that you have these stories and you just keep repeating eating right.
Speaker A:No, we understand that through the Bible, through psychology, you know, our words frame our world, which means the.
Speaker A:There are power in your words inasmuch that if you speak life, you will have life.
Speaker A:If you speak death, you will have death.
Speaker A:We can get into some extra theology about that, but I just want to frame this episode around that.
Speaker A:If I speak positive, if I speak, you know, life, then I will have life.
Speaker A:If I speak death or negative, I will have that we have.
Speaker A:We frame our world with our words.
Speaker A:The same goes in.
Speaker A:So as we frame our world, it creates a mindset, because mindsets aren't random thoughts.
Speaker A:Mindsets are patterns of thinking based on the points that we've anchored ourselves to.
Speaker A:Because why?
Speaker A:Because these are the stories that shaped us.
Speaker A:And in a little bit, I'm going to go into a story that absolutely wrecked me, but shaped me in the same way.
Speaker A:But we'll get to that in a second because we want to start off with this to understand what Romans 12:2 says.
Speaker A:It says, be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Speaker A:And we understand that your mind is, according to the Bible, has to be renewed daily.
Speaker A:What you don't renew will become stagnant.
Speaker A:What becomes stagnant becomes welded.
Speaker A:What becomes welded is hard to change, to clean and to move.
Speaker A:It's not impossible, but becomes hard like.
Speaker A:Like welding of steel.
Speaker A:The.
Speaker A:The longer it sits, the hotter the weld.
Speaker A:The.
Speaker A:The harder it is to remove once it's welded.
Speaker A:That's.
Speaker A:We got to think about that with our mindsets.
Speaker A:If we're so called to renew our mind every day, then we have to actively renew our mind or we'll be stuck in these loops, which is why you and I have these stories.
Speaker A:I'm not good enough.
Speaker A:I'm not talented enough.
Speaker A:There'll never be enough money.
Speaker A:There's never going to be a good enough to go and do all that God's called me to.
Speaker A:It's time to raise these stories from these base levels.
Speaker A:This is what I went through and what I got from it.
Speaker A:So this is what God's calling me to, and this is what God's bringing me through.
Speaker A:So to do that, we've got to confront three different shifts.
Speaker A:This is.
Speaker A:Is there more?
Speaker A:Sure, but we got to confront three basic ones.
Speaker A:The first shift, we're going to confront is identity over insecurity.
Speaker A:And here, Ephesians 2:10, it says, you are God's workmanship.
Speaker A:You were crafted by God.
Speaker A:And because insecurity whispers, who do you think you are?
Speaker A:Right?
Speaker A:This is that inferiority complex.
Speaker A:This is the imposter syndrome.
Speaker A:Identity says appoint it not by accident on purpose.
Speaker A:So if we are God's workmanship before the foundations of the earth, God, before we even had a past, created something for us to accept, to walk in, to be called to.
Speaker A:So therefore we understand that it is our identity in Christ that should be stronger than our insecurities.
Speaker A:It should be our identity in Christ that says, I am or I belong to Christ, I am his Son, or you, for you, you may be his daughter.
Speaker A:That we have to understand that is our identity first.
Speaker A:And so anything we come against is just basically us navigating fear, navigating all these other things.
Speaker A:Insecurity really is fear of not being capable of doing the thing that we're called to do.
Speaker A:The second shift we can make is that stewardship is over scarcity.
Speaker A:Now we live in a world where, whether it be if you're online, you see all the fomo, the fear of missing out and all this, we live in a world where it's poverty mindset.
Speaker A:You may have a million dollars in the bank and still have a poverty mindset.
Speaker A:The FOMO thing in marketing is a fear based marketing tactic to make you have an emotional response so that you act on something and buy from them.
Speaker A:And we're not called to be living in fear.
Speaker A:We're called to be living in God's grace.
Speaker A:Just because you missed the window to buy that course does not mean you've missed Go God and what he's trying to give you.
Speaker A:Just because you missed the opportunity to be on this particular podcast or on this particular thing that you were trying to do does not mean God doesn't open other doors or windows.
Speaker A:We do not live in fear.
Speaker A:We do not live in scarcity.
Speaker A:We live in God's blessing.
Speaker A:We live in God's supply.
Speaker A:Remember Philippians 4:19 says, God supplies every need according to his riches and mercies, according to his riches and merchant mercies, not ours, not our thoughts, but his.
Speaker A:So when we make these shifts from anchor points to from, you know, this, this place of bad or negative mindsets to positive and uplifting mindsets to godly mindsets, we understand that we're stewards and we don't live in scarcity.
Speaker A:We live in God's blessing and abundance.
Speaker A:The third thing is a partnership over performance.
Speaker A:Now this one is going to hit hard because we're just really wired.
Speaker A:Performance because.
Speaker A:And how do you know?
Speaker A:Because you're highly tied to your results.
Speaker A:Which goes back to the identity.
Speaker A:Because most of us who are entrepreneurs, creatives, creators, are tied to what we produce, not who we are.
Speaker A:So it ties right back into identity.
Speaker A:And instead of partnering with God, partnering with people, we want to do performance.
Speaker A:We want to make sure that what we're doing is noticed.
Speaker A:Because if it's not noticed, then are we even valuable?
Speaker A:And that's not the case.
Speaker A:You are valuable beyond measure.
Speaker A:John 15:5 says, Apart from me, you can do nothing.
Speaker A:So when we're, when Jesus is saying this, we understand that we have to partner with God so that all things that God is trying to do, he does through us and that we can do these things because apart from God, we cannot do nothing.
Speaker A:I mean, that's what the Word says.
Speaker A:Because if we're doing it apart from God, we are in this really results based thing where it's like we live and die based on what we can do, what we can perform form how we can act.
Speaker A:And if you know your bank account isn't high that month, then you're just trash, right?
Speaker A:We think like this and we want to make sure that we shift that to say God is in charge.
Speaker A:I'm partnering with him because if I partner with him, his hands on it, if it's hands, if his hands are on it, then everything will change and actually come out according to the way that he wishes, not the way I'm just trying to force it through, which then becomes into this place of we got to jump into a practical application.
Speaker A:So do you're starting to see the pattern where it's hard to change a mindset because there's so many different things that we have to unpack, so many different things that we are dealing with.
Speaker A:We're dealing with this performance based mindset.
Speaker A:We're dealing with the scarcity mindset.
Speaker A:We're dealing with this insecure mindset because we have been trained since kids with our trauma, with our challenges to be focused on keeping ourselves safe as opposed to keeping ourselves in the will of God.
Speaker A:And I think this is where we get struggles because if we go into Corinthians, we understand that mindsets become strongholds if they're not healthy.
Speaker A:Because it talks in Corinthians about taking down every stronghold that has built itself up against God.
Speaker A:Well, what does that mean?
Speaker A:It means everything that we lean into.
Speaker A:If I'm Leaning into performance over presence, then I'm going.
Speaker A:My results are more important than God's hand in my, in my life.
Speaker A:If I'm looking at insecurities, it means I need to make myself feel secure instead of being secured in who God is and who he tells me he is.
Speaker A:If looking in there to be, you know, abundant.
Speaker A:But I can't find abundance apart from God's spirit.
Speaker A:So I'm trying to build wealth, but I'm never filling the hole that I'm trying to use the wealth to fill.
Speaker A:We can only fill that hole with Christ and the wealth is just an add on or a bonus that that God allows into our lives to build his kingdom.
Speaker A:And if we're not doing these things, we're stuck in these looped mindsets and they become strongholds which now needs to be tear it apart brick by brick.
Speaker A:So let's talk about where you can start.
Speaker A:Now this is going to be a process.
Speaker A:This is not, not something that's going to happen.
Speaker A:You say a few fancy things, you do a few affirmations and suddenly your mindset is shift.
Speaker A:Absolutely not.
Speaker A:It took you 30, 40 years to get where you are.
Speaker A:It's going to take a minute to get you from where you are to where you need to be.
Speaker A:And you know you've gone around the mountain 40 times.
Speaker A:So 40 is the good number to stop.
Speaker A:Let's stop and move in the right direction.
Speaker A:So let's get in some practical application.
Speaker A:One of the things is speak scripture.
Speaker A:Now, I am not a fan of affirmations.
Speaker A:I am not.
Speaker A:I know it's huge and I know it's popular because I'm not a fan of demanding God to do anything because I believe in God's sovereignty.
Speaker A:I believe in God is the master of all.
Speaker A:He knows better.
Speaker A:Am I?
Speaker A:So who am I to demand that God give me something I ask?
Speaker A:But God partners with me so that anything I ask according to his will, he'll give.
Speaker A:So what I want to do is I understand that scripture will be the only thing that never passes away, right?
Speaker A:The Bible tells us that.
Speaker A:It also says my word will not come back void.
Speaker A:Which means Jim's word will always be void.
Speaker A:Your words will be void.
Speaker A:God's word will never be void.
Speaker A:And if you go back into the Hebrew of that in the Old Testament, it means God's word will actually destroy walls and do everything it needs to do in order to be accomplished.
Speaker A:Right?
Speaker A:In order to make it pass.
Speaker A:So if, that being said, we should really focus on speaking scriptures, not affirmations.
Speaker A:I'm not affirming that I'm a child of God.
Speaker A:I'm saying that the Bible tells me that I have a spirit of adoption.
Speaker A:I'm not saying that I'm just going to be abundant for the fact that I'm going to claim it.
Speaker A:Because now we're getting into this new age, new world manifestation which is not Christian at all.
Speaker A:But we can say that God has given me the ability to create wealth.
Speaker A:Deuteronomy 8:18.
Speaker A:So we there are scriptures that we can start begin to speak because we want to frame our use our words to frame our world.
Speaker A:So let's use God's word to frame our world correctly.
Speaker A:Let's choose an anchor verse every day.
Speaker A:So here's practicality.
Speaker A:So get your pen and paper or you can check the show notes or let me do a plug.
Speaker A:You can jump on the newsletter where I'm, where I send stuff like this out all the time.
Speaker A:Www.leadwithjim.com forward/nl Jump on the newsletter.
Speaker A:You get all sorts of nice little goodies each week dealing with stuff like this.
Speaker A:But what we jumping back in.
Speaker A:We want to make sure that we choose the right anchor.
Speaker A:But do one verse a day.
Speaker A:Don't do 50 verses.
Speaker A:You're not going to get anything out of that.
Speaker A:Don't try to be an overachiever because there's a lot of people like I read 50 verses a day and I do listen.
Speaker A:You're not going for performance.
Speaker A:I'd rather get one verse through you than 50 verses like in your head.
Speaker A:So let's do that.
Speaker A:So let's pick one verse every day.
Speaker A:365 days.
Speaker A:Map out, map out 365 verses.
Speaker A:If that's something you'd like me to help you with.
Speaker A:Drop me a line in the comments or wherever you're listening this to or if you're listening on Apple, just reach out to me on socials at Lead with Jim.
Speaker A:But here's the deal.
Speaker A:We want to speak it.
Speaker A:Just go around the house speaking it.
Speaker A:You know, I could do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Speaker A:That doesn't mean you can go out and lift weights because you're strengthened by Christ.
Speaker A:That means no matter what circumstances I'm in, Christ gives me the strength to get through the circumstances.
Speaker A:So I do that.
Speaker A:That may be one of your verses.
Speaker A:And then what you said, you just begin to speak it throughout the day.
Speaker A:And then here's what I want you to do.
Speaker A:Hold on to that verse and meditate on the meaning.
Speaker A:Go into chat GPT and ask, you know, what was the context of this verse?
Speaker A:So I understand it.
Speaker A:Matter of fact, I got a YouTube channel that I'll link, our YouTube that I'll link down in the descriptions where I did.
Speaker A:How to use chat GBT to enhance your Bible study.
Speaker A:Okay.
Speaker A:Because we want to understand what it means and how to apply it and just meditate and think on that all day.
Speaker A:And I promise you, if you're framing your world with God's word, your world will shift, your mindset will shift, and your anchor points will be on the right place, not the place you were hurt.
Speaker A:Now let's move into number two.
Speaker A:And this is going to be a little bit more on the controversy side, depending upon where you come from.
Speaker A:I do think you should do a quick meditation with this.
Speaker A:Now, I want to say there's a difference between worldly meditation and Christian meditation.
Speaker A:Worldly meditation, I'm just going to give you the basic, in a nutshell, empty yourself of all things Christian meditation.
Speaker A:Fill yourself up.
Speaker A:That is the basis.
Speaker A:We are Christians.
Speaker A:If you're listening to this podcast and if you're not listening, if you are listening to this podcast and you're not a Christian and you'd like to be one, let's have that conversation.
Speaker A:Jim leadwithjim.com Happy to talk with you on any bit of that, but here's the deal.
Speaker A:I want you to get some nice music, some, some soft worship music, something without words, and meditate.
Speaker A:Because what you're going to do, you can close your eyes, but you're going to learn to breathe.
Speaker A:You're going to learn to breathe.
Speaker A:Breathe correctly.
Speaker A:And as you breathe, you're going to, you're going to say the word, the scripture to yourself.
Speaker A:You're going to think about the scripture.
Speaker A:You're going to ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten the scripture to you.
Speaker A:You're going to, you know, because he reveals all things to us.
Speaker A:You're going to sit there and you're going to make sure that you're doing this meditation with the scriptures.
Speaker A:Why?
Speaker A:Because this is a.
Speaker A:It could be 3, 4, 5, 10 min.
Speaker A:This is a focal point that says, I am going to give every bit of attention to this thing and this thing only.
Speaker A:That's why we do it.
Speaker A:Not because it's something magical, not because it's something that's going to make God's hand move faster, but it's us with an intentionality that says, I am going to get to a place where I'm focused on the scripture.
Speaker A:So that Holy Spirit has the opportunity to talk to us.
Speaker A:Some of you can't hear the Holy Spirit because you don't slow down long enough to listen.
Speaker A:Quit striving and know that he is God.
Speaker A:Psalm 46, 10.
Speaker A:Now, here's the other thing.
Speaker A:This is number three on the practical side of it.
Speaker A:And then we're gonna jump down into one more thought and we'll close this out.
Speaker A:The next thing is, the fact is, is you have to have a weekly check in with yourself.
Speaker A:Call it whatever you want.
Speaker A:The weekly potential audit, right?
Speaker A:Because you're unlocking your potential.
Speaker A:You cannot unlock your potential until you unlock your mindset.
Speaker A:So we need to start this journey.
Speaker A:So do an audit and do it just once a week.
Speaker A:You don't have to overwhelm yourself.
Speaker A:If you journal daily, you can put in a little section, mindset audit of the day.
Speaker A:Because what you're going to be doing is you're going to look at your patterns of thought.
Speaker A:How did I think about this?
Speaker A:What was I thinking here?
Speaker A:How did I.
Speaker A:How did I process this?
Speaker A:Did I process this according to the Word or did I process according to my trauma?
Speaker A:Where are you processing the things you need to process?
Speaker A:Secondly, you're going to go, where did I live this out, the scripture, and where did I miss it and where.
Speaker A:And try to live in insecurity.
Speaker A:What you're doing is you're trying to really see you for you and you're asking God to help you move how you see you to how he sees you so that your mindset can come into the mind of Christ and that you can live accordingly in this place of spiritual abundance, not spiritual scarcity.
Speaker A:And the last thing is find an accountability partner.
Speaker A:We need them.
Speaker A:Mindset is no different.
Speaker A:Find your Barnabas, guys.
Speaker A:You need to find your Barnabas.
Speaker A:And if you don't know who Barnabas is, check X. Barnabas was a rock star because he lovingly flagged scarcity speech.
Speaker A:He was like, don't speak like that.
Speaker A:He came in, he was the bridge.
Speaker A:He was, he encouraged, but he called you out in the encouragement.
Speaker A:Like.
Speaker A:Like Barnabas was cool.
Speaker A:And so you need a Barnabas in your life.
Speaker A:Somebody who isn't afraid to call you out on your junk.
Speaker A:Like, if you sit there and say, well, I just.
Speaker A:I'm just not good enough.
Speaker A:And Barnabas go, what does God say?
Speaker A:Or if you're sitting there saying, I'll never be enough, what does God say?
Speaker A:Like, he's not afraid to call you.
Speaker A:He or she is not afraid to call you out While lovingly say, man, you're awesome.
Speaker A:So let me bring this together and tell you why this is important.
Speaker A:And I was stuck in an anchor for.
Speaker A:Since I was 12, up into my late 30s, almost early 40s, and I'm mid-40s now.
Speaker A:And I remember growing up, I wanted to be a musician.
Speaker A:I wanted to be a trumpet player.
Speaker A:I wanted to teach and perform.
Speaker A:And I was good like I was.
Speaker A:I was.
Speaker A:I felt like I was rocking it up.
Speaker A:All was good until my mom and my grandmom said, you have no talent.
Speaker A:And that stuck with me.
Speaker A:That whole thing stuck with me.
Speaker A:So much so that I quit music.
Speaker A:I quit everything else.
Speaker A:I joined the military.
Speaker A:I. I finished college later with a.
Speaker A:With another degree as opposed to music.
Speaker A:I was three years into a music education degree or music performance degree.
Speaker A:I had like half a year left, and I was going to graduate as a performer.
Speaker A:And I said, nope, I have no talent.
Speaker A:And when this was said to me, it was one of those things where, because it was an anchor, because somebody I cared about said something that my heart agreed with, it became a mindset.
Speaker A:And that's how I did everything.
Speaker A:When I was trying to pastor a church, I had no talent.
Speaker A:Everybody was better than me when I was trying to.
Speaker A:When I've been trying to build businesses, I have no talent.
Speaker A:Everybody else is better.
Speaker A:And this lasted for a long time because everything I would do, which is always go back to this place.
Speaker A:And then, as I said in scripture, it talks about Ephesians 2:10.
Speaker A:You know, we start speaking stuff like that.
Speaker A:I am.
Speaker A:I am God's workmanship, right?
Speaker A:We start speaking different things and framing our worlds with God's scripture.
Speaker A:And then Holy Spirit began dealing with me.
Speaker A:And he would ask me questions of is this really true?
Speaker A:And I would answer, I believe it to be true.
Speaker A:He says, you may believe it, but is it true?
Speaker A:What does the words say?
Speaker A:And so I went on for decades, until probably almost 40 years old, where I started breaking this habit of this anchor because I was like, wait, I actually do have some talent.
Speaker A:But it's not about my talent.
Speaker A:It's about what God's doing in me.
Speaker A:The anointing that he put on me and the ability, what he's calling me to, the ability he's given me to do what he's called me to.
Speaker A:And then when I started doing and saying things like that and believing stuff like that, I started seeing as I'm a good speaker, I'm a good writer, whereas before it was, I was average at best, or nobody wants to hear what I have to say.
Speaker A:Nobody wants to read what I have to read.
Speaker A:But scripture, accountability, confronting journaling, lots and lots of prayers and broken hearts in the midst of the prayers.
Speaker A:And it started to shift to one day it was broken.
Speaker A:So let me encourage you with this, is that you may be carrying some anchor points, some you're aware of and some you're not aware of.
Speaker A:These are stories that we've got to start confronting with the Word, because once we start confronting them, they can shift because we renew our mindset daily.
Speaker A:Because we're transforming, not just changing our mind.
Speaker A:And let me make another note.
Speaker A:You are not here for the power of positive thinking.
Speaker A:That is not biblical.
Speaker A:I don't care how positive you are.
Speaker A:It doesn't change anything or change reality.
Speaker A:What changes reality is truth.
Speaker A:Who has truth?
Speaker A:Jesus Christ.
Speaker A:So we got to get back into these places where we're saying, okay, what lies and deceptions did I believe?
Speaker A:Not good enough, no talent.
Speaker A:What does God say about that?
Speaker A:And then how can I allow God to confront that lie so that I can start shifting to believe the truth?
Speaker A:And once you start making the shift, you'll see it and it's like turning the Titanic.
Speaker A:If you get it and you start turning it, there's a high probability you're not going to hit that iceberg.
Speaker A:Because at when Holy Spirit is your guide, you don't have to worry about the iceberg.
Speaker A:You just do what the guide says.
Speaker A:So I want to encourage you, start confronting the things you've been holding on to.
Speaker A:Start confronting those mindsets.
Speaker A:Start ripping those things down brick by brick, those strongholds, so that you can live in the fullness of what God really has for you.
Speaker A:I want us to say, may the Lord God, may it.
Speaker A:I just want to say, Father, I thank you for the truth that outranks every lie.
Speaker A:Swap our negative anchors for your unshakable truth and renew our minds.
Speaker A:And then teach us, Lord, how to renew our minds daily.
Speaker A:Unleash our potential, Lord.
Speaker A:For we are here, called by you to do your work and us being imperfect, doing the perfect will of God, we fall short.
Speaker A:So help us in every way.
Speaker A:And Lord, we thank you for that.
Speaker A:In Jesus name.
Speaker A:And with that being said, let yourself rise up to the places God's calling you.
Speaker A:Transition your thoughts and your mindset.
Speaker A:And remember, you're not chasing potential, you're unleashing it.
